Inside 蜜桃视频

Headshot of Katrina Samson.

Principal’s Message

Dr. Katrina Samson

At 蜜桃视频, we believe in the boundless potential of girls. Our goal is to cultivate an environment where girls are empowered to become the changemakers and leaders of tomorrow. To achieve this, we are committed to providing unparalleled opportunities through innovative programs, state-of-the-art facilities and a rigorous academic curriculum. These elements are crucial in equipping our students with the skills and confidence necessary to make a significant impact in an ever-evolving world.

Our new strategic plan, , has been designed to create an environment where if girls can dream it, they can do it. Our programs are developed to inspire and challenge our students. From STEM initiatives to arts and humanities, we ensure that every girl can explore her interests and discover her passions. Programs like our leadership workshops, micro-credentials courses and community partnership initiatives are crafted to foster a sense of responsibility, creativity and resilience. By participating in these activities, our students not only gain practical skills, but also learn the importance of collaboration, empathy and ethical decision-making.

In tandem with our robust programming, our facilities play a vital role in supporting our educational mission. We are blessed with a beautiful 22-acre campus in the middle of the city. We are beneficiaries of the generosity of those who have gone before us and supported 蜜桃视频鈥檚 mission with their time, talent and treasure. And now, we look toward the future and what facility upgrades and additions will ensure that we can give every girl the best opportunity to dream, discover and learn. For instance, over the next 18 months, we are aiming to meet the demand for athletics opportunities鈥攁 demand driven by our girls in a post-pandemic world. As we watch women鈥檚 sports start to (finally) take off in our city with the introduction of the PWHL, and the announcement of pro sports franchises in soccer and now basketball, we know the demand for girls’ participation in sport will only continue to grow. At 蜜桃视频, we have always known that sport offers the chance to develop critical skills like confidence, teamwork and grit. With the generosity of our community, we hope to make significant enhancements to our outdoor athletic and play facilities, including a new artificial turf field and seasonal air-supported dome; enhanced outdoor racquet sports facilities for tennis and pickleball; improvements to the grading of our grass fields; and new outdoor seating and gathering areas. We encourage all members of our community to get involved in helping transform tomorrow at 蜜桃视频. Keep an eye out for information about how we hope to ensure 蜜桃视频 remains .

We are also planning for further enhancements to our academic learning spaces鈥攈onouring the beauty and history of the architecture on campus while investing in cutting-edge technology, modern science laboratories and dynamic learning spaces that encourage innovation and exploration. These facilities support our goal of providing students with hands-on learning experiences, from conducting scientific research to developing digital solutions for real-world problems. The physical resources at 蜜桃视频 are more than just buildings; they are the foundation upon which our students can build their dreams and ambitions. And, we are readying ourselves to transform these spaces to meet the changing needs of students, ensuring they are prepared to excel in university and beyond.

At 蜜桃视频, we understand that the future will be shaped by those who dare to innovate and lead. By creating a supportive and stimulating environment, we empower our students to envision and enact positive change. We are proud of our role in nurturing the next generation of female leaders who will undoubtedly transform tomorrow.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in this vital mission. Together, we are paving the way for our students to make a meaningful difference.

Message from the Board of Governors

Jill Fraser 鈥87, Chair of the Board of Governors

It is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of another fantastic school year. This will be the last Inside 蜜桃视频 message from the Board for the year. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the 蜜桃视频 community, Dr. Katrina Samson, the Senior Leadership Team, faculty and staff, as well as to the entire Board of Governors and Committee members for their unwavering support in continuing to embrace the full 蜜桃视频 experience that we all know and love.

In keeping with the school鈥檚 heritage of traditions, the Board invited student leaders to the April meeting to share their perspectives on the year. We were joined by Fiona Shen (School Captain), and Khushi Sharma (Student Prefect). Fiona and Khushi enthusiastically spoke of the main focuses for this year鈥檚 student leadership team: School Spirit鈥攑romoting pride, unity and a commitment to 蜜桃视频鈥檚 values; Empowerment and Growth鈥攃elebrating individuality, promoting risk-taking and shifting away from a perfectionist mindset; Wellbeing鈥攑rioritizing student wellbeing by encouraging healthy balances; Inclusivity and Diversity鈥攃ultivating an inclusive community; and Transparency and Communication鈥攂eing transparent and inclusive in decision-making processes and ensuring open communication. It鈥檚 clear that this year鈥檚 leaders created a safe space for everyone to be heard while elevating a strong emphasis on 鈥渏ust being you.鈥

It was inspiring to listen to Fiona and Khushi speak passionately about their key successes through diversity and inclusivity. Examples include encouraging students to wear clothes they are comfortable in at social events and to be themselves, and increasing communication through platforms such as Chomp Chat, anonymous feedback forms, Cappy Corner and collaboration. It was not only a pleasure to have these outstanding young leaders join us at the Board meeting, but it was also a learning and insightful experience鈥攖hank you, Fiona and Khushi! Please share our gratitude with the whole student leadership team.

As this school year heads to a conclusion, so many exciting events have taken place this year that have strengthened the deep affection our students, staff, faculty and community have for our beautiful school. It has been wonderful to see so many in our community take part in 蜜桃视频鈥檚 cherished events such as Celebration Saturday, Carol Service for the Upper and Junior School, Hockey Day and Founders鈥 Day, as well as sports and performing arts scheduling and inter-school trips such as CISAA basketball and OFSAA.

The Senior Leadership Team has continued their work on the Strategic Framework鈥斺攚hich was rolled out to the wider community in April of this year to overwhelming positive feedback. The three pillars of Connection, Wellbeing and Belonging; Future Ready; and Transforming Tomorrow will be a road map for the school鈥檚 strategic priorities for the years to come, ensuring we continue to be a world leader in girls鈥 education.

Last but certainly not least, I would like to acknowledge our 2024 Grads. As you step into this new chapter in your life, we hope that you carry with you the lessons you鈥檝e learned, the friendships you鈥檝e built and the strength and passion of our community within the Ivy. Look to the future and be ready to face new challenges, continue learning and being inquisitive, and make a positive difference in the world and in the lives of others.

As always, no message would be complete without a gentle reminder that for any donation inquiries, please reach out to 蜜桃视频鈥檚 Executive Director of Advancement, Annette Paul (apaul@havergal.on.ca), to find out how you can participate.

Best wishes to everyone for an amazing summer ahead!

Jill

Preparing Young Women to Make a Difference

By the Heads of Schools (Junior: Kate White, Middle: Cissy Goodridge and Senior: Deirdre Timusk)

This year, 蜜桃视频 has continued to create opportunities for students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 to make a difference and to take on an ever-changing world with confidence, resilience and global-mindedness. One of the areas we wanted to highlight is through the development of leadership skills.

In the Junior School

In the Junior School, students are often drawn to action when they see an injustice, or identify an area for change. For example, this year鈥檚 Grade 4 classes led the charge on Earth Week and proudly hosted climate change workshops, running 鈥淭ake Action Letter Writing Sessions鈥 to politicians, starting a battery recycling program and participating in 鈥淔ast Fashion Sewing Circles鈥 to repurpose old clothing. Inspired by this, a group of students in Grade 2 then started a club to pick up trash at recess, to ensure the grounds of the school are treated with respect. It鈥檚 truly incredible to see the ripple effect that 鈥渕aking a difference鈥 can have on a community and it is our hope that examples such as these continue to inspire our students to take action.

In the Middle School

In the Middle School, Grade 8 students have the unique opportunity to lead our Middle School assemblies.听Through this process, they learn about leadership as they choose a theme and implement the event, honing their ability to plan, collaborate and communicate effectively. This program not only showcases the students’ organizational and public speaking skills, but also brings a sense of unity and excitement to our mornings. This hands-on experience empowers them with confidence and provides a natural stepping stone to the leadership opportunities that will become available to them in the Senior School.

In the Senior School

What leadership looks like for each individual is different and is built upon the person鈥檚 values as well as learned skills. In the Senior School, we both strategically plan to help students develop their leadership skills and seize organic opportunities when students come forward with new initiatives. For example, every Grade 12 student participates in the Core Strengths program, which provides our graduates with the self-knowledge, skills and strategies to be high achieving, confident and effective leaders in their futures. Additionally, when students express a desire to create and lead a new mentoring program, we support them in turning their ideas into action.

Through these kinds of experiences, students not only enhance their communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills, they also cultivate the confidence needed to advocate for change, both at 蜜桃视频 and beyond. Moreover, these opportunities empower students to champion causes they believe in, helping them to develop resilience in the face of challenges while on their journeys to becoming women who make a difference.

The Transformative Power of Pushing Physical Boundaries

Tamara Curtis, Upper School Health and Physical Education Teacher

Imagine being tasked with creating a tough, gritty and resilient young person. Would you do it by avoiding adversity, denying risk or removing obstacles?

If we want our daughters to persist in the face of setbacks, they must learn how to embrace failure. Building resilience has a price and, as caregivers of young people, we need to decide if we鈥檙e willing to help them pay that price鈥攁nd if it鈥檚 worth it.

蜜桃视频 famously challenges 鈥渨hat will you do?鈥 If we believe young people can make a difference, we must then embolden them to be strong, creative and ferocious in the face of opposition; however, we are also conditioned to avoid hardship and failure, when possible. Transformative growth happens when we step outside our comfort zone, and pushing physical limits is offered in some unique ways at 蜜桃视频.

Confidence and growth are earned in doing hard things. One way we enable and prioritize this is the Grade 9 triathlon (swimming, rowing/erging and running). This difficult challenge is undertaken after setting fitness goals, collecting fitness data and training rigorously over the course of 10 classes. This journey requires sweating, pushing physical limits and working hard. At the beginning of this process, students say “I鈥檓 not going to be able to do this,鈥 or 鈥淚 can only do the bare minimum,鈥 or 鈥淭his is too hard!鈥

Then comes the transformative growth, bit by bit. When they begin in earnest to track their progress, adopt a growth mindset and put in the hard work, students then say: 鈥淚 think I can do a higher level,鈥 or 鈥淚鈥檓 faster than I thought I was鈥 or 鈥淚 worked really hard today鈥. do you see this sweat?鈥

They ultimately all win the race because they pushed themselves and accomplished a hard thing and recognized their increased capacity for discomfort. As their outlook and confidence begin to soar, this 鈥渧ery scary鈥 and 鈥渋mpossible鈥 triathlon becomes a source of pride. The transformation is palpable and powerful. The support and encouragement of classmates is raucous as they achieve their goals together.

Another transformative opportunity offered at 蜜桃视频 is through our U16 and U20 Rugby teams. Playing rugby is a uniquely powerful experience requiring months of intense training, overcoming the little voice in their heads that tells them they shouldn鈥檛 be doing this, 鈥it鈥檚 too scary,鈥 that culminates in their first fierce tackles and the gratification and celebration of their power and physicality. There is great power in girls protecting and battling with and for their teammates.

These monumental confidence-builders have enormous potential for a ripple effect, inspiring girls to continue to break down gender stereotypes, step into non-traditional roles and value their physicality and capacity to be strong and do hard things.

Goodbye HC!

Fiona Shen, School Captain

When tasked to write a goodbye letter, I couldn鈥檛 believe that our year had come to an end. So many emotions, memories and thoughts flooded my mind, but I couldn鈥檛 articulate them into words. I can only say I am not ready to say goodbye. Goodbye means leaving the place where laughter surrounds you in each corner you turn, where you get lost in a sea of green and gold and where you can make mistakes; it’s like a second home.

To 蜜桃视频

Thank you for making me into the person I am today and for empowering me to find my voice for advocacy issues. I am forever thankful to have grown up in an environment where trying, caring and putting in effort are things that are celebrated.

To Our Teachers

Your guidance, wisdom, humour and unwavering support during the stressful time of university applications have made all the difference. You are the brutally honest friends we all need. From calling us out when “Senioritis” peaked to encouraging us to push through our final assignments, you鈥檝e kept us grounded and focused. Thank you for the countless after-class conversations, the invaluable advice and the patience you showed as we navigate this challenging year. Your dedication and acceptance have shaped us in ways we will carry forward throughout our lives at university and beyond. We are forever grateful for the environment you created within your classrooms, whether it be in the B hallway or the new building, where we felt inspired and empowered to be our best selves.

To The Younger Students

As you navigate your journey at 蜜桃视频, I encourage you to embrace every opportunity that comes your way. Whether it’s striking up a conversation with someone new, attending TA sessions in the morning or showing your support for our athletes, don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort. It’s in these moments of exploration that you’ll truly come to understand what makes 蜜桃视频 so special.

To My Fellow Grads

I remember when we were younger, sitting at the front of the Brenda Robson Hall, wishing we would become Seniors in their white blazers leading the school, and now, we’ve become those leaders ourselves. Since the first day of school this year, the thought that every experience was a “last” has only deepened our connection as a grade. From our last first day, Celebration Saturday, Carol Service, Grade 11/12 dance, Hockey Day, Diversity Week, Founders’ Day to our last Earth Week, our bond grows stronger with each milestone. This year, we鈥檝e formed unexpected friendships and shared countless laughs and tears, especially in the Grad Common Room (GCR) where the laughter echoed, GCR fines were abundant and the sound of knocking from Grads who were locked out were constant. I will always remember the night we sang Halo together at Campfire Circle鈥120+ flashlights, wide smiles and voices came together that night.

Some people say they peaked in high school with a hint of sarcasm, but I can genuinely say that I peaked in high school because this remarkable group of people made my experience unforgettable. We’ve witnessed each other’s growth and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for us.

Although our time at 蜜桃视频 may be coming to an end, the memories, lessons and friendships we’ve formed will stay with us wherever we go. We carry a piece of 蜜桃视频 with us as we set forth into whichever part of the world. So, perhaps this isn’t a goodbye letter after all. Maybe it’s simply a “see you later” from the Class of 2024.

Inside 蜜桃视频

Headshot of Lindsay Norberg.

Message from the Deputy Principal

Lindsay Norberg

At 蜜桃视频, the arts are not just a co-curricular program or an aspect of the curriculum; they are the heartbeat of our community. They reflect the creativity, talent and spirit of our students and employees. They play a unique role in fostering a sense of unity and belonging at 蜜桃视频 as they provide many different entry points for members of our community to learn and grow together. From captivating performances at Founders鈥 Day to stunning displays lining the halls of our Junior and Upper Schools, ingenuity and skill are everywhere. As I sit in Prayers, witnessing students and staff bravely sharing their talents, taking risks in front of their peers and watching how the school community celebrates them, I am reminded of the profound impact the arts have on our community. I count my blessings that I get to start my day with music on a regular basis. As I wander the Junior School halls and I am met by displays of student poetry neatly woven into the school building, they bring a smile and sense of joy to my day.听

Indeed, the arts are not confined to specific events or performances; they are woven into the fabric of everyday life at 蜜桃视频. Whether it’s through music, visual arts or theater, our students, faculty and staff continually showcase their unique strengths and talents. What truly sets our Arts Programs apart is not just the exceptional quality of the performances, but also the spirit of collaboration, dedication and celebration that permeates every endeavor.

As we showcase the arts at various community events, such as music nights, art shows and plays, it is important to recognize the depth and significance of these experiences. Behind every performance lies countless hours of dedication, from early morning rehearsals to late-night practices. Moreover, the arts provide invaluable opportunities for building relationships, exploring ideas, learning new ways to express ourselves, understanding the perspectives of others, developing new skills and taking risks鈥攊t is a testament to the transformative power of artistic expression in shaping the holistic development of our students. To catch a glimpse of the breadth of our Arts Program, we have put together .

In essence, the arts at 蜜桃视频 are not just about creating beautiful moments; they are about fostering connections, nurturing creativity and empowering individuals to reach their full potential. As we continue to cherish and celebrate the arts, let us remember that they are not just a part of who we are鈥攖hey are what make us truly extraordinary.

Lexi Ensor

Message from the Board of Governors

Lexi Ensor 2013, President, HOGA

As the President of the 蜜桃视频 Old Girls Association (HOGA) and an ex-officio member of the Board of Governors, I am honoured to represent our vibrant community of Old Girls/Alums and uphold the strong connection between our Old Girl/Alum network and the school.

The mission of HOGA remains steadfast: to foster lifelong connections among Old Girls/Alums and to support current students as they embark on their own 蜜桃视频 journey. With a global network spanning over 70 countries and nearly 10,000 graduates, we are committed to initiatives that nurture enduring bonds and celebrate our shared 蜜桃视频 experience.

This year has been particularly significant for our community. We began with Reunion Week, marking the start of a year filled with connection and celebration. Our calendar has been bustling with 蜜桃视频 Connections Presents networking events, Young Alum University Socials and regional gatherings across Canada. Additionally, we’ve been deeply engaged in meaningful advisory work on the Directorate and have collaborated enthusiastically on the production of Chronicle 2024.

We’ve experienced fruitful collaborations, including presentations by Kate Crokam, Director of Alumni Engagement, and myself on innovative alumni volunteerism at the Canadian Council for Advancement of Education (CCAE) Alumni Professionals Summit in Montreal. Additionally, we’ve worked closely with the Directorate, especially with Naomi Melvin ’09 and Alex (Bittner) Howard ’02, in developing Chronicle 2024. The Directorate’s shift toward advisory roles, coupled with their seamless collaboration with Kate, has facilitated deeper integration with the school. Successful consultation sessions with Class Reps have provided valuable feedback and discussions on recent changes. As we conclude the 2023-24 academic year, we eagerly anticipate the return of the HOGA Annual Meeting on Wednesday, May 29, preceding our final social event of the year, Aperol and Appetizers on Avenue. Stay tuned for more details!

To our current students: as you venture beyond the ivy walls, know that you are stepping into a dynamic network of support that will accompany you through every milestone. We eagerly look forward to bolstering your connection with the 蜜桃视频 community, ensuring it remains a valuable resource and source of strength as you navigate your paths ahead.

For any inquiries about HOGA’s initiatives, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at lexi.ensor@havergal.on.ca or join us at our annual meeting to learn more.

Warmly,

Lexi

An Artful Path to Personal Growth

Matthew Varey, Director of Arts

The value of art in character development mimics similar patterns in mathematics, physics, exercise, philosophy and parenting. Art functions as all other human interactions do. No matter how long we plan, experiment, discuss, research and consider, in order to comprehend something’s merit, we need to actually do it. If character is developed through opportunity, experience, adversity, failure, learning and growth, the arts are ideally suited for personal and communal advancement.

At 蜜桃视频, we understand that artistic engagement clarifies awareness of our inherent value and school values. Taking ourselves seriously is an elegant form of self-compassion, leading to increased facility with empathy and unconditionality. Artistic practice is rigorous, inquiry-based and often driven by personal integrity, compassion and courage. When communities engage with compassion, courage, integrity and inquiry, we can exceed individual potential while increasing resilience and belonging.

Cultivating grace and compassion in our internal and external relationships is an artistic process. Art is often wrongly considered a thing鈥攁 dance, a painting, a song, a script. As art takes place electrically and chemically within the brain, we are the art. Internal and external relationships are the patterns and shared materials that determine our experience within, and artwork about, the human condition. When we are willing to give of ourselves, we increase vulnerability and generate growth, allowing for progress toward enlightenment.

Character develops through an increase in self-awareness. Doing the work required to become self-aware is the art. Self-awareness and character are communal materials and allow access to a vivid and informed shared language.

The Power of Culture: Integrated Arts in the Junior School

Rachel Read, Integrated Arts Teacher

蜜桃视频’s Junior School has a thriving and vibrant Arts Program that focuses on ensuring students have the opportunity to learn a variety of skills while discovering more about who they are as individuals. As you wander the campus, you can see young artists preparing to make moccasin beadwork by sketching flowers in the Simpson Family Quilted Garden. You hear the sound of the steel pan drums and ukuleles as students use skills learned in class to jam together. One classroom looks dark, but as you pass by you notice the students are rehearsing their shadow puppet theatre performances, ensuring their musical compositions for their drama align with the mood and atmosphere they are creating with their narrative. Students skip by while singing their most recent song and excitedly stop to teach you the Japanese clapping game Omochio Tsukimasho they recently learned in class. You pass a group of Upper School students who have stopped by to visit and reminisce, and they ask if they can help teach the younger students the dances they fondly remember performing in Junior School Prayers.

It is evident that, at 蜜桃视频, students feel empowered to express their emotions and identity through the various projects, mediums and activities explored both in and outside the classroom as a part of our thriving arts curriculum and co-curricular programs.

One vibrant aspect of the 蜜桃视频 Arts Program is the Grade 5 and 6 Integrated Arts course. At the heart of this program is the understanding that all art flows from culture, which informs traditions of dance, drama, music and visual art, and provides the historical and personal context that enriches the creation and appreciation of art making. Within Integrated Arts, we have an opportunity to explore culture in more authentic and complex ways than we could within a single artistic discipline. We explore art traditions, but also history, storytelling and personal experience. This exploration is supported by our artist in residence program, where students and teachers work closely with experts who introduce cultural understandings alongside specific artistic expertise.

Students and faculty have been fortunate to be able to learn alongside culture bearers and visiting artists such as Cree-M茅tis artist educator Marissa Magneson, who teaches about the culture, music and art-making of the M茅tis; Dr. Kofi Gbolonyo, Capilano University and The University of British Columbia professor and founder of Nunya Academy, who works with students to share the culture, music and dance of the Ewe people of Ghana; and, most recently, experienced Orff-Schulwerk educator and respected author, Doug Goodkin, who shares not only his passion for music education, but also discusses the social, political and cultural history of jazz as we sing, dance and make music together. Setting this cultural context for our art making deepens students鈥 understanding of the purpose and impact of various forms of expression. Using culture as our starting point allows natural explorations of a diversity of viewpoints. Students see themselves and their own culture and art-making traditions reflected in the classroom, which is especially powerful.

During our most recent residency with Doug Goodkin, faculty and students were captivated and inspired by Mr. Goodkin鈥檚 teaching. Students further learned more about themselves as individuals and felt confident in expressing themselves in new and creative ways. Our community was moved by Mr. Goodkin鈥檚 ability to put our student鈥檚 learning of the rich history of jazz in a historical and cultural context in a way that is accessible to young learners with a strong focus on social justice. These experiences not only build our artistic skills and cultural knowledge, but provide us with the capacity to approach the world around us with an open heart and the drive to make a difference in the world.

Empowering Excellence: 蜜桃视频鈥檚 New Strategic Plan

Recently we launched our new strategic plan, , outlining our vision for the 蜜桃视频 community and setting the stage for an exciting new chapter for the school. Our plan is more than just preparing students for the future; it’s about empowering them to shape it. Empowering Excellence is built around three pillars that highlight our commitment to fostering a holistic, future-focused experience: Connection, Wellbeing & Belonging, Future-Ready and Transforming Tomorrow. We are investing in programs, curriculum, people and facilities to provide our students with unparalleled opportunities to learn, grow and thrive. We thank you, our community members, for participating in the consultation process to inform the plan and for partnering with us as we continue to build on our track record of delivering excellence.

What the Arts Mean to Me

Emily Nevison, Arts Prefect

I am in love with all the arts, but the artistic medium I have always been drawn to the most is theatre. The first time I ever performed on stage was in Grade 2 during my elementary school鈥檚 production of Annie, where I played an unnamed maid. I am proud to say that I gave an amazing performance dusting imaginary shelves. Eleven years later, I have performed in over 20 different productions, my most recent being 蜜桃视频鈥檚 鈥淭he Children鈥檚 Hour,鈥 and I cannot wait to continue my passion for theatre at university.

Theatre has provided a space for me to build incredible friendships and it continues to teach me to consider perspectives and experiences outside of my own. Additionally, having exposure to public speaking has made me a confident young adult. Yet, despite everything that art has given me, my relationship with the medium is not unlike Romeo and Juliet鈥檚鈥 nobody is allowed to know about it!

For some, liking art can feel embarrassing. How, they ask, can there be value in pursuing a career in theatre when some of my peers will be designing rockets in a few years? As a community, we have made the grave mistake of treating art as merely entertainment and leisure. We must start acknowledging the power and importance of art as a medium that shapes culture, sparks important conversations and creates change. We should acknowledge that a career in the arts is just as vital to humankind as any other traditional career path. As Winston Churchill once said, 鈥淭he arts are essential to any complete national life. The State owes it to itself to sustain and encourage them鈥 ill fares the race which fails to salute the arts with the reverence and delight which are their due.鈥

That is why this year鈥檚 theme for Arts Week was 鈥淭he Importance of Pursuing a Future Career in the Arts.鈥 Through activities and events such as our Arts Student Wellbeing Panel and the Art in Nature Walk, students had the opportunity to reflect on the importance of art in their day-to-day lives. Additionally, students who may not initially have considered themselves 鈥渁rtists鈥 had the opportunity to participate in an Arts Battle during our Arts Week Prayers, in which they created paintings related to the week鈥檚 theme.

Arts Week is an amazing opportunity to celebrate the artists within the 蜜桃视频 community, but it is important to remember that fun events do not erase the shame that many artists are made to feel when they pursue their medium professionally. We must work together to change the world鈥檚 misapprehension to a belief system that fosters creativity and imagination! I am confident that 蜜桃视频 will continue to move steadily in this direction of further inclusion and creativity!

Message from the Head of Boarding

Nicole Folkes

In the Boarding School, our commitment to wellbeing and community is at the heart of everything we do.

We continue to take advantage of our beautiful urban location within the city of Toronto. Students have experienced some of the world-class Arts and Culture Toronto provides (such as the Art Gallery of Ontario and live musical productions at The Royal Alexandra Theatre), participated in physical pursuits (such as sweating in a spin class, dancing in a hip hop class, ice skating in the heart of the city and roller skating at Union Station) and engaged in self-care activities (ranging from nature walks, rock climbing, yoga and a tufting class).

These initiatives underscore our unwavering dedication to nurturing a supportive community and developing meaningful connections that enhance the Boarding experience at 蜜桃视频. We believe that by prioritizing wellbeing, we create a community dedicated to nurturing compassion and empathetic relationships as we provide opportunities for student personal awareness and growth.

This year, we have added grade-focused programming to create opportunities for new students to connect with their peers. Beyond our 蜜桃视频 community, we actively seek to broaden our connections. Collaborating with other boarding schools, we offer enriching experiences for our students to make new friends through community activities and social events.

Recently, our student leaders introduced an exciting new initiative鈥攁 spirit event designed to promote community spirit and friendly competition. Boarding Advisory Groups came together to participate in various games, earning points toward winning the Boarding Banner. This event not only encouraged teamwork and friendship, but also reinforced our commitment to fostering a strong sense of community within the Boarding School.

These initiatives underscore our unwavering dedication to nurturing a supportive community and developing meaningful connections that enhance the Boarding experience at 蜜桃视频.

Message from the Board of Governors

Brad Radin, Chair of The 蜜桃视频 Foundation Board of Directors

The 蜜桃视频 Foundation is a registered charity that both receives and invests donations to support key priorities for 蜜桃视频. The Foundation oversees an investment portfolio of mostly donor-endowed funds, valued at $31.3 million as of June 30, 2023. These endowed funds have been gifted over time by parents, Old Girls/Alums, graduating classes, faculty and staff. The Foundation disburses a certain percentage of the value of the endowed funds annually to the school.

Working with an external investment manager and in accordance with the Foundation鈥檚 Statement of Investment Policies and Objectives, the Foundation ensures that its resources are prudently invested with the aim of both growing and preserving capital while maintaining the ability to provide stable grants to the College for priorities such as student financial assistance.

The Foundation is governed by a board of nine Directors, including ex-officio appointments of 蜜桃视频鈥檚 Board of Governors and a member of the 蜜桃视频 Old Girls Association.

Because 蜜桃视频鈥檚 annual revenues must cover not only the present year鈥檚 expenses, but also capital investment and infrastructure costs, fundraising is an essential ingredient to maintaining 蜜桃视频鈥檚 ongoing fiscal health and strength. We are grateful to generations of donors, past, present and future, for their generous contributions and ongoing belief in 蜜桃视频鈥檚 mission.

蜜桃视频鈥檚 Boarding Council

Morayo Osibajo, Boarding Prefect

Student leadership in Boarding is crucial to the wellbeing and sustainability of the Boarding School Program, which is why a group of students in Grades 9 to 12 were excited to join the Boarding Council to engage with the community more tangibly while building their transferable skills.听

Throughout my four years living at 蜜桃视频, I have seen the first-hand impacts of student leadership. Being a new student in a new city (or, for many, a new country) requires a lot of strength, courage and support. It is thanks to current students who are willing to guide, help and teach the new Boarding students that some find the transition into Boarding life less stressful. We are forever thankful to the student leaders who showed us their love for our Boarding School through their constant service, as they passed this love over to us.听

Previously, student leaders in Boarding were known as the Junior Don Team. However, this year we decided to restructure our leadership positions and create a Boarding Council to align with the leadership titles in the Day School.

Although certain parts of our roles have stayed the same, we have also had the opportunity to implement new events into the program. One of those initiatives is our monthly spirit events! These are once-a-month activities in which Boarding Advisory Groups compete against each other to win advisory points, which determine the winners at the end of the year. These spirit events encourage collaboration, teamwork and connection between the students in their Boarding Advisory Group (who represent all grade levels in the Senior School). It is such an excellent new addition to our Boarding Program and reinforces the importance of community in Boarding. I鈥檓 proud to be a part of it.

Boarding March Maple Madness Experience

Natalie Kwan, Boarding School Staff

Diverse programming at the Boarding School creates a supportive environment where our students continue to learn and grow outside of school hours. Fun-filled weekends are packed with opportunities to master a skill, adventure into new parts of the city and create meaningful connections with peers and the local community. Boarders can choose to participate in as many activities as they want鈥攕ome events hosted this year include a visit to AGO for Black History Month, rock climbing at True North, ceramics and spa day.

Most recently, 蜜桃视频 Boarders joined Upper Canada College Boarders at their Norval Outdoor School for a season of March Maple Madness. After a delicious pancake brunch at Stephen House, students had a chance to tour the sugar bush, identify trees ready for tapping and collect sap, which was then boiled into syrup. Did you know that it takes 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup? And did you know that while tapping makes a wound, it does not endanger the health of the tree? Everyone couldn鈥檛 stop sipping on freshly-made maple tea while learning these fun facts. Thank you to the wonderful Norval team for teaching us the history and science behind maple sugar production!

From Mexico to Nigeria: 蜜桃视频’s Journey Across Continents

Alexandra Zourntos, Associate Director of Admissions

There鈥檚 a tiny silver suitcase in my office. It鈥檚 not filled with sunhats and SPF, but with 蜜桃视频-branded tablecloths, banners and green & gold swag. It鈥檚 my partner on the road, you might say.

Over the past year, my tiny but mighty partner has been towed across tarmacs, train stations and conference centres throughout Mexico, Barbados, Jamaica, South Korea, Vietnam, Japan, the UK, Nigeria (led by Nicole Folkes, Head of Boarding) and Bermuda (led by Emily Simms-Brown, Director of Admission).

Our affinity toward Boarding is incredibly strong at 蜜桃视频. We believe wholeheartedly in the environment鈥檚 ability to expand students’ horizon. As such, we remain committed to building global connections in thoroughly researched markets鈥攂oth established and emerging. This of course leads to a lot of plane rides.

I have countless stories to share, from 48 hours of lost luggage in Mexico City (not the tiny silver one), to miscalculating the local currency in Ho Chi Minh and severely over-tipping a barista (I don鈥檛 regret it). However, it鈥檚 far more important to share my consistent inspiration and pride when representing a school as widely recognized and celebrated as 蜜桃视频. Whether I鈥檓 connecting with Old Girls/Alums, meeting prospective families or presenting to agents, it’s clear to me that the 蜜桃视频 name is cherished and sought-after in the vast world of education鈥攁 world where we’re so fortunate to be a part of a professional network of schools from the UK, US and Canada.

As our travels continue in 2024-25, we鈥檒l be visiting new and exciting markets, which will soon be shared with the community. My tiny silver suitcase will be awoken from its summer slumber and repacked with a freshly washed 蜜桃视频 tablecloth as we set off to do what we love most: representing this magnificent institution, its growing Boarding Program and the inspiring people within it. If you or someone you know is in a city on 蜜桃视频鈥檚 travel itinerary, which can be found on this page of our website, please connect and say 鈥渉ello!鈥

Inside 蜜桃视频

Message from the Principal

Dr. Katrina Samson

February is often associated with the 鈥渂lahs鈥濃攁 time of year in Canada when the dark skies and cold weather leave people feeling a little down, looking longingly towards the springtime. At 蜜桃视频, however, we combat those February blahs with a healthy dose of green and gold spirit! From our youngest Gators to our Grads, Spirit Week at 蜜桃视频 is met with great enthusiasm. New students, faculty, staff and parents get to experience first-hand one of the distinguishing 蜜桃视频 qualities鈥攐ur unmatched school spirit. The highlight of the week was undoubtedly Hockey Day, where this year more than 800 students and huge numbers of faculty, staff, parents and Old Girls/Alums joined to cheer on our Gators as we took on Bishop Strachan School in this annual tradition celebrating girls in sport and school spirit.

This year, thanks to some parents and the perseverance of our Upper School Athletic Director, we had three players from Toronto鈥檚 PWHL team鈥擩ess Jones, Jessica Kondas and Emma Keenan鈥攋oin us for the ceremonial puck drop. In speaking with the players before the game, they were blown away by the excitement (and volume) of the crowd. For me, having them join us during their inaugural season highlighted the difference we are making at 蜜桃视频鈥攖hat is, showcasing the strength and passion of women and girls who are making a positive difference in the world. If anyone ever questioned the interest in women鈥檚 sports, all they had to do was experience the excitement in the Mattamy Centre鈥攆rom the hundreds of signs made to support athletes on the ice, to the creative chants designed to cheer on our Gators 鈥攖he power of women and girls was on full display. For girls, their moment to be at centre ice, centre court and centre stage has most definitely arrived!

Despite the healthy competition throughout the week, the true meaning of Spirit Week is a celebration of community and togetherness. The pride in our school, the connection between students who know what it means to work hard and play hard, to support one another in excelling, to strive for excellence, these are the sentiments that bond our girls together, shape our community and make 蜜桃视频 like no other place on earth. Thank you for all of your support this month.

The end of February also marks the time we welcome new members to the 蜜桃视频 community. Our Admissions team has been working non-stop to meet prospective families and share what makes 蜜桃视频 so special. Thank you to the countless volunteers who helped with school tours and shared positive experiences about HC with prospective families. We鈥檙e excited to welcome an incredible group of students to 蜜桃视频 and see how they will contribute to the 蜜桃视频 spirit!

Message from the Board of Governors

Diane Jeffreys, Chair of the Financial Sustainability Committee

The Board of Governors’ Financial Sustainability Committee has the primary mandate to safeguard the long-term financial sustainability of 蜜桃视频. As Chair of the Financial Sustainability Committee, I have the pleasure of working in partnership with an engaged group of volunteers, as well as 蜜桃视频鈥檚 Chief Operations Officer, Laura Sims, and the Executive Director of Finance, Johann McCormack.

Our committee members include current and past parents and leaders in the community. We look to involve a mix of individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and financial experience. This provides the opportunity to bring a diverse perspective to discussions and broad insights in support of the financial decisions the school makes.

The Financial Sustainability Committee is working with the Planning & Priorities Taskforce and 蜜桃视频鈥檚 Senior Leadership Team to ensure the financial plans are in place to support the long-term strategic direction of the school.

Working with the school鈥檚 Chief Operations Officer and the Executive Director of Finance, we continue to focus on overseeing and monitoring 蜜桃视频鈥檚 financial plan, both short and long-term. This involves balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders, including students, parents, staff and faculty, and鈥攍ike all good financial plans鈥攊s a balancing act requiring careful consideration of a series of trade-offs. The topics that we regularly discuss include:

  • Capital spending that invests in the campus to maintain and enhance our facilities in support of our strategy and programs.
  • Short and long-term financial plans and the funding required to support the wide variety of programs that are fundamental to the student experience at 蜜桃视频.

As the Chair of the Financial Sustainability Committee, I am happy to report that 蜜桃视频 continues to be financially strong, benefiting from a disciplined, responsible and thoughtful approach to fiscal responsibility.

US and JS Athletic Recap Winter 2024

Anna Bartlett, Junior School Athletic Director, and Carla Di Filippo, Upper School Athletic Director

As Athletic Directors, we are constantly impressed by the level of participation of our students. We are a school of 鈥渄o-ers鈥 and this is highlighted in the Athletics program.

This winter, we were thrilled to host 26 sports teams in the Upper School, with 426 participating athletes, and 15 teams in the Junior School, with 155 students competing in one (and sometimes two) of these teams! There is nothing that brings us more joy than seeing the increasing demand for sporting opportunities for women and girls.

Here are some athletic highlights for the year so far:

  • Our Upper School D2 Hockey Team placed second in the CISAA regular season, even though it was only in its second year of existence. The team competed in a 3v3 tournament hosted by St. Anne鈥檚 School.听
  • We鈥檝e also seen a huge surge of interest in rugby at HC, with more than 30 students registered for winter rugby training.
  • We’re proud that our school is leading the way for girl’s squash. After applying pressure on the CISAA to make squash an official league for girls, 蜜桃视频 is making this happen by providing support for the sport through the convenership of the league. 蜜桃视频 just won the first ever CISAA “A” Flight championships!
  • At the Junior School, there are a record-breaking nine Volleyball Teams for students in Grades 4 to 6, with more than 82 students participating in the sport. Here’s a photo of all of our JS volleyball players this year:

Being a part of a team has so many benefits and seeing high participation rates makes us proud as educators. We know that students who are involved in athletics gain confidence from not only the skills they learn during a season, but also from the support and encouragement they gain from having a strong social network made up of coaches and teammates. Students who develop healthy, active lifestyles when they are young benefit from these skills throughout their lives.

蜜桃视频's D1 Hockey Team at Hockey Day.

蜜桃视频 Loves Hockey Day!

At 蜜桃视频, Hockey Day is more than just a hockey game. It鈥檚 a day where students, teachers, staff, Old Girls/Alums, families and friends come together, dressed head-to-toe in green and gold (quite literally) to show our support, gratitude and love for everything HC. There is no force greater than the HC spirit. The vibrant energy, unity and sense of belonging is present each and every day at our school, but Hockey Day is when we get to show the world how we live these attributes and what it truly means to be a Gator!

At its core, school spirit is more than just cheering for sports teams or participating in pep rallies; it’s about cultivating a deep connection to one’s school and embracing its values, traditions and community. This year we hosted more than 800 蜜桃视频 students from Grades 4 to 12 at Mattamy Athletic Centre, where we cheered on the Gators.

Even though we lost the game, we still won the day. We could not be more proud of how our team represented our school and played their hearts out, supporting one another from start to finish. For the fans, it was a treat to watch the athleticism of one of the most beautiful sports in the world. At a time when women’s sports are breaking records in viewership and ticket sales, Hockey Day also demonstrates, once again, that women belong in sport. Thank you, HC, for demonstrating class, inclusiveness and spirit on Hockey Day.

It鈥檚 definitely a Gator thing!

Spirit Week Message from the Clubs and Spirit Prefect

Nicole G.

As I look back on my 14 years at 蜜桃视频, it’s hard to believe that they’ll soon be coming to an end. From my first day in Junior Kindergarten until now, my fondest memories have always been centred on the spirit that defines our school.

One particular event that stands out is Spirit Week. I may be biased as Clubs and Spirit Prefect, but it really is the best week of the year and it’s incredible to see everyone in the community embrace the fun by dressing up in their craziest outfits. The sight of students dressed in their head-to-toe colourful outfits, all coming together to cheer as loudly as they can, always amazes me. There is a sense of unity that flows through these ivy walls; whether it’s because of the energetic cheer-offs or the collective enthusiasm during assemblies, there’s a fantastic sense of togetherness that’s truly inspiring.

This past year, I decided to run for the Clubs and Spirit Prefect role for the 2023-24 school year because of my passion for fostering unity and excitement within our community. Events like Spirit Week have a significant impact on us students by providing a real sense of belonging and helping us create lasting memories.

I will never forget my first Spirit Week Assembly: I was four years old when all the Prefects came to the Junior School and taught us the school cheer for that year. Ever since then, I knew that spirit at 蜜桃视频 is more than just a tradition; it’s a fundamental part of what makes us Gators; it’s what makes this community so strong and our school experience truly special.

As I prepare to move on to the next chapter of my life, I’ll always cherish the memories of cheering in a crowd of green and gold or shedding tears during my last hockey day. Go Gators!

The Power of 蜜桃视频鈥檚 Green & Gold

Krista Koekkoek, Vice Principal of Student Life and Wellbeing

I have just come up for air after my first Spirit Week at 蜜桃视频. It was a whirlwind of dressing up, cheering on and participating in the fun inter-school competitions that can help remind us of what really matters in our schools. No, it鈥檚 not necessarily having the most Party City accessories to match your grade鈥檚 dress-up colour or winning the infamous Hewitt Cup game versus Bishop Strachan School, although those are great highlights. As someone tasked with thinking about wellbeing for our students and its intentional development in our school, for me, Spirit Week brings to life the true power of community and the potential of its collective impact.

Let me explain.

We all yearn to belong. It鈥檚 no surprise that this feeling of genuinely being a part of a community is considered essential to us feeling well. When we are valued for our strengths, we feel seen. When these strengths intertwine with those of others, an unstoppable synergy emerges. True wellbeing is cultivated through both appreciating individual contributions and embracing the power of the collective. A definition of true belonging that struck a chord with me, which I’m quoting from author and inspirational speaker Bren茅 Brown, is the ability to “share your most authentic self with the world and find sacredness in both being a part of something and standing alone.”

So, what did I see this month? How were 蜜桃视频 students both standing confidently alone and united as one?

  • Our annual Upper School Grade Cheer Off: We saw students emerging as leaders in rallying their peers, creating lyrics and choreographing set pieces. Then, standing together as a grade in front of their school, singing louder and prouder than I have ever witnessed.
  • Hockey Day: There were leaders on the ice and in the crowd鈥攁nd everyone had their own sense of style鈥攂ut all of it was green and gold. Our cheers were uplifting, in praise of peers and regardless of the score; the school emerged as victorious.
  • What about our Junior School House meetings? The Grade 6 students planned and executed the House meetings鈥攁 leadership moment they won鈥檛 soon forget. And do you know who was in the crowd? The Upper School House leaders who came to cheer them on and be a part of the meeting; a testament to the interconnected nature of our community.

In essence, wellbeing is realized when individuals embrace their authentic selves, finding confidence in both collective endeavours and solitary pursuits. This vibrant spirit is alive and thriving at 蜜桃视频, nurturing young women who are poised to make a difference. Go Gators!

Carla Di Filippo

Upper School Athletic Director

Ms. Di Filippo (also known as Ms. D.) has the privilege of providing opportunities for girls to play sports in the hopes they discover a passion for physical activity, which for her is one of the most rewarding careers in the world.

Sports have been an integral part of her journey since childhood, when she was a competitive swimmer, specializing in the 400m IM, 200m Breaststroke and 800m Freestyle. During her undergraduate years at McMaster University, her dedication to swimming led to numerous achievements, including winning three Ontario University Athletics championships, receiving co-MVP recognition in 2001 and earning Academic All-Canadian status in 2000 and 2001. Following the conclusion of her swimming career, Ms. D. discovered Ultimate (Frisbee) and instantly fell in love with the sport. The spirit of the game, coupled with the athleticism it demanded, captivated her instantly.

After learning that Ultimate hosts a World Championships and is a part of the World Games, Ms. D. dedicated much of her free time to trying to make the national team. In 2012, one year after having her first child, she was named to the Senior National Team, where they finished third at the World Championship in Japan! This experience sparked a realization: there was a shortage of women coaches in the sports realm, a gap that Ms. D. felt compelled to fill. Thus began her transition from player to coach.

Over the years, Ms. D. has had the privilege of coaching elite athletes from across Toronto and Canada, both on club teams and national teams. Among her proudest moments are clinching the World Championships in 2016 (triumphing over the USA) and co-coaching the World Games team in 2022 in Alabama. To be recognized three times as Coach of the Year by Ultimate Canada has also been a tremendous honour for her.

Ms. D. is currently coaching the Women’s Senior National Team, who are competing at the World Championships in the Gold Coast, Australia, in late August 2024. She is greatly looking forward to this national team cycle and competing on the world stage one more time this summer!

As Ms. D. continues to navigate her coaching journey, she remains steadfast in her commitment to empowering young athletes, instilling in them the values of teamwork, dedication and sportsmanship. Her experiences, both as a competitor and a coach, have reinforced her belief in the transformative power of sports and the profound sense of fulfillment that comes from nurturing the next generation of athletes.

She is grateful every day for the opportunities 蜜桃视频 provides for students and the school’s belief that girls and women deserve the same sporting opportunities as men. Every day she gets to live out her dream in a place that shares the same passion, demand for opportunity and, most importantly, spirit of sport.

Inside 蜜桃视频

Garth Nichols

Message from the Vice Principal of Experiential Education and Innovation

Garth Nichols

As the Vice Principal of Experiential Education and Innovation, I have a background of living abroad and travelling internationally, as well as starting my own entrepreneurial initiatives and exploring emerging technologies. I have always had a passion for experiential learning. Throughout my eight years at 蜜桃视频, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the transformative power of experiential learning and global experiences in our students’ lives. I鈥檝e observed student growth, resilience and newfound perspectives firsthand while accompanying our students on trips abroad, which is truly remarkable. These opportunities not only expand their horizons, but also redefine when and where learning occurs, how it takes place and the depth and personal significance of that learning.

Experiential learning has become an integral part of our academic program, permeating various disciplines from Science to Languages, and it’s a key part of our Global Learning and Leading Diploma program. Our dedicated staff in the Forum for Change鈥攚hich functions as the global heartbeat of the school鈥攅ngage with our students both inside and outside the classroom at the local, regional and international levels to create experiences that leave lasting impressions.

One of the highlights that intersects experiential learning and innovations in learning is our HC-X TC-9 course鈥攚hich stands for “Transdisciplinary Course for Grade 9s” or “The Challenge for Grade 9s.” This course develops students鈥 skills in transdisciplinary thinking and learning by building knowledge and examining current and predictive events through hands-on experiences. In March of 2024, we will launch the second year of this immersive course designed for Grade 9 students. This program not only equips them with a deeper understanding of global issues and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, but also empowers them to take local actions that make a real difference.

Moving from local impact to global, 蜜桃视频’s Forum for Change has just concluded an exhilarating year in our Global Experience programming. From Ottawa to Bhutan in 2022鈥23, to Kananaskis and Nairobi in 2023鈥24, our students have explored the world, broadening their horizons and embracing diverse cultures.

At 蜜桃视频, we follow the well-researched , guiding our students through a transformative process. We start by helping them develop their global competencies, preparing them for the experiences that lie ahead. During their travels, they put these skills into action, gaining insights that go far beyond traditional classroom learning.

Upon their return, we engage in what we call a transference session, where students and faculty reflect on their experiences. This is a pivotal moment where they craft the narratives that will shape their self-identities and the stories they share with others. Storytelling, as we believe, is a powerful means of integrating their newfound knowledge into their personal and collective consciousness.

Our halls and classrooms are now filled with stories of adventure, connection, service and cultural immersion, alongside discussions of generative AI, robotics, food and world religions. These global experiences not only enrich our community, but also deepen our collective understanding of 蜜桃视频 as a global entity.

Experiential learning, at its core, enriches our community by helping us understand who we are as learners. It sparks a passion for exploration, nurtures empathy and instils a sense of responsibility to make a positive impact in the world.

As we look forward to more adventures, connections and learning opportunities, let us continue to embrace experiential learning and global experiences as integral parts of the 蜜桃视频 experience. Together, we will shape the future of our students and empower them to become compassionate, globally aware leaders.

Here’s to the adventures that await us and the stories yet to be told.

Message from the Board of Governors

Jill Fraser, Chair of the Board

New Year’s greetings from the Board of Governors. We extend our warmest wishes for a happy and healthy 2024.

As the winter term begins, we should pause to reflect on the eventful school year to date. We commenced the year with the return of more co-curricular and athletic events, and joined together as a community for another successful Celebration Saturday and Reunion Weekend. Thrive Week returned to promote mental health awareness, and highlighted some of the strategies and skills that students can use to improve their wellbeing. The Upper School had 27 exciting sports options available to them this fall, with a record 407 students participating. We hosted our first Gator Games of the year in October, with our teams supported by fans proudly wearing green and gold! We arranged a hugely successful Music Retreat to Campfire Circle and a Drama Retreat to Mono Cliffs Outdoor Education Centre. Our Health and Physical Education department reinstated the open gym program at lunchtime with high participation鈥攕tudents were excited to get exercise as well as meet like-minded people. The year closed with a series of Christmas concerts. The traditional Upper School Carol Service held at St. Paul鈥檚 Bloor Street church was a delightful evening of carols and lessons. The Junior School Christmas Concert was a beautiful event also held at St. Paul鈥檚, and the JK/SK Christmas Concert was held in the Junior School. What a wonderful way to move into the holiday season!

As we look ahead to planning for the next school year, we would like to remind parents/guardians that the opportunity to apply to serve on the Board of Governors or a Board Committee is currently open. The Board of Governors Application Form is located and I encourage you to become involved. This year the Board is especially interested in identifying potential candidates with one or more of the following: philanthropic board and/or charitable foundation board experience; capital infrastructure project oversight experience; and CPA/CFO/operational finance/public accountancy experience. The application due date is Friday, February 2, 2024. Applications will be reviewed in February/March with interviews taking place in March for those selected. Additional details on the role and responsibilities of Board and Committee members . Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at boardofgovernors@havergal.on.ca.

We have accomplished great things so far this school year and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve throughout the rest of the year. I鈥檓 delighted to see our school values of Integrity, Inquiry, Compassion and Courage at work in the school and our community. Thank you all for your efforts and support as we navigate the remainder of the year together.

Thank you,

Jill

Round Square: Opportunities Abound!

In November, five 蜜桃视频 student Delegates, 蜜桃视频’s Principal Dr. Samson and Vice Principal of Experiential Learning and Innovation Garth Nichols travelled to the Round Square International Conference to join over 1200 other students from around the world at the Brookhouse Schools, Nairobi, Kenya. They began with a pre-conference excursion to the Masai Mara, where for four days, they lived and learned about Masai social, economic, environmental and cultural practices at the Masai Educational Research Centre. Then they travelled into the heart of Nairobi to take part in the conference.

This year, the conference focussed on Internationalism, Democracy and Adventure. Participants learned from senior government officials, activists, fashion designers, journalists and more about 鈥淭he New Africa鈥濃攖he theme of the conference. Students were billeted and were able to make long-lasting connections with students from Nairobi and from all over the world.

蜜桃视频鈥檚 membership as a Global Member with Round Square avails us of these opportunities, and they will continue to grow. In May of 2024, there is an opportunity for Middle School students to participate in the Round Square Regional Conference in Kananaskis, Alberta. More information about this excursion can be (applications close Friday, February 2).

In September of 2024, Senior School students can apply to join the Round Square International Conference in Bogota, Colombia. Applications are now open and selection will be completed before the March Break. More information can be (applications close Friday, February 2).

Hey 蜜桃视频! We are beyond excited for Hockey Day and to announce that 蜜桃视频鈥檚 Hockey 4 Health initiative is continuing this year! The core of sports is community, the exact thing that makes Hockey Day so special. Along with the thrilling game on the ice, Hockey Day has the unique power to bring us together, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared spirit. Highlighting this feeling emphasizes the idea that none of us are alone and how strength truly lies in this community, no matter what day it is. Unity is forged through cheering for a common cause and in the shared moments of triumph; these experiences build bonds that extend far beyond the rink.

Hockey 4 Health is a powerful platform for our 蜜桃视频 community to come together and address the stigma surrounding mental health. In support of this initiative, 蜜桃视频 and The Bishop Strachan School are working together to raise funds for Kids Help Phone. This is just one of the ways we can work toward ending the stigma around getting mental health support. By leveraging the strength of our shared experiences and love for our community, we aim to break down barriers, encourage open conversations and create a supportive environment for all.

HC-X Digital Microcredentials

In fall 2022, HC-X launched a new initiative for students in Grades 9 to 12 who may be curious about a potential future career to explore bite-sized learning in emerging fields relevant to their interests and futures.

Over the 12 to 16 hours of a program, students are empowered to explore their interests in topics such as Pre-Medical Studies, Artificial Intelligence, Design Thinking & Entrepreneurship and Contemporary Finance and immerse themselves in the knowledge, content and practice within these fields.

Students work and learn alongside industry leaders and experts from organizations such as The Academies by Harvard Student Agencies and InspiritAI, Stanford and MIT alumni. The Contemporary Finance program also features connections with 蜜桃视频 alum and current parents on the topics of Women in Capital Markets, ESG investing and Cryptocurrencies.

Upon completion of a Digital Microcredential course, students are issued a digital wallet and a blockchain-based microcredential certificate to recognize their achievement.

Although they are non-credit courses, participating in these digital microcredential opportunities empower students with focused, flexible and recognized learning experiences, enhancing their employability and adaptability in a rapidly changing world.

Blended Learning Conference poster

Blended Learning鈥擶hat Is It?

Have you heard of 鈥渂lended learning鈥 but you aren鈥檛 really sure what it means or how it affects the students at 蜜桃视频? Read on to learn more!

Blended Learning is an overall course design that includes a mix of face-to-face and online activities, engagements and interactions. This includes popular strategies such as a station rotation, playlist or flipped lesson.

Take a minute to reflect on the following statements and how they could better support learning:

  • Imagine being able to speed up, pause or rewind your teacher when taking notes during instruction.
  • Imagine receiving instant feedback on your set of practice questions.
  • Imagine receiving more time and attention one-on-one with your teacher to focus on a challenging area.
  • Imagine the confidence that comes from shaping your identity as a learner and when choices in the pace, path, place and time of your learning are up to you.

Over the past four years, 蜜桃视频 has increasingly used Blended Learning approaches to promote student agency in their learning, equipping them with self-directed learning skills for their future.

蜜桃视频 faculty have participated in professional learning experiences on Blended Learning. The HC-X led a team of 15 Blended Learning Leads and Coaches from across the Junior and Upper Schools to investigate opportunities to deepen these practices.

Working with author and Christensen Institute researcher Heather Clayton Staker, HC-X is hosting a Blended Learning Conference in May 2024 to continue this pedagogical learning journey with other educators across CIS Ontario schools.

Our Blended Learning Leads and Coaches have been developing their skill sets in this area and will continue to help classroom teachers enhance the learning experience for all students.

Getting Started with Cybersecurity

Sam Chan, Chief Information Officer

Technology is everywhere these days. Every day we hear about new developments, features and upgrades. We also hear about large companies and individuals having their accounts hacked and the unfortunate impacts that occur as a result. All of this change and impact can feel pretty overwhelming when we think about having to protect ourselves from these cyber threats.

Cybersecurity can be a challenging topic鈥攅veryone agrees it鈥檚 important, but with so much information available, sometimes it鈥檚 hard to find a place to start or find information that is free of technical jargon. Keep reading for a three-point plan to help get you and your family on your way to improving your cybersecurity.

1. Educate Yourself

The hardest place to be is: 鈥淚 don鈥檛 know what I don鈥檛 know, and I don鈥檛 know what questions to ask.鈥 For those of you in that predicament, is a great place to start. Simply answer three questions to produce an action plan that you can download. You can do all of this without registering.

is still one of the most prevalent issues out there. to see if you can spot the phishing attempts!

2. Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and Passphrases Where Possible

We want to use the best means possible to protect access to our online accounts that contain financial and health information, or smart devices that help manage our home.

You should use (MFA) where possible as this means that a hacker will need to have more than your username and password to access your account. If MFA isn鈥檛 available, then you鈥檒l want passwords that are easy to remember but difficult to guess (). I鈥檓 a big proponent of using where possible.

Bonus tip鈥攄on鈥檛 use the same passphrase across all your accounts. I have separate passphrases for each of my online banking accounts.

3. Keep Devices Up-to-Date and Back Up Your Data

Keep your devices up-to-date so that you receive the latest security updates to help protect your device from a constant and ever growing number of threats. This includes deleting apps and data that you no longer use, or safely disposing of devices that you no longer use.

It鈥檚 also a good idea to take regular backups of your data just in case something goes wrong with an update or you do get hacked鈥攁t least you鈥檒l have a copy of your data to fall back on.

I hope this helps give you a solid start to creating a cybersecurity strategy for protecting you and your family.

Mr. Adams, HC-X Teacher

Jeff Adams

HC-X Teacher

Mr. Adams has been at 蜜桃视频 for almost 10 years and has taught students in Science and Math and has led a variety of HC-X programs. He is actively involved as one of our Middle School Form leaders, athletics coach and mentor for the Global Learning and Leading Diploma (GLLD) program. With undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Science, he is currently completing a PhD in curriculum, teaching and learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto. He is a coach for Cohort 21, a community of passionate Conference of Independent Schools (CIS) Ontario educators who are interested in refining and redesigning their practice through the exploration of new pedagogies, ideas and tools.

Since becoming an HC-X Teacher at 蜜桃视频, Mr. Adams is very excited to be co-developing with Mr. Nichols our Grade 9 course called TC-9, which stands for 鈥淭ransdisciplinary Course for Grade 9s鈥 as well as 鈥淭he Challenge for Grade 9s.鈥 It is a course that requires students to use the skills, knowledge and approaches from several different academic courses simultaneously to address their chosen topics. Through TC-9, students are learning about and engaging with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. HC-X teachers like Mr. Adams work closely with Grade 9 educators to interweave key skills, learnings and activities from other required curricula within the TC-9 course.

This year, Mr. Adams has been focussing on incorporating inquiry-based learning, experiential education and project-based learning into the classroom, which he lives and breathes outside of 蜜桃视频 as he pursues his PhD in Transdisciplinary Studies. His curiosity for continuous learning is an inspiration and an asset to his students and the school community.

Inside 蜜桃视频

Annette Paul headshot

Message from the Executive Director of Advancement

Annette Paul

At 蜜桃视频, giving back is in our DNA. From the time that students arrive on their first day, in conjunction with their studies, they are shown different ways they can help others. Whether it鈥檚 designing tools in Grade 6 science that help create a more accessible world; selecting accessibility initiatives as their area of designation for their graduating year fund; running food drives; supporting agencies working to combat food insecurity; leading parent volunteer fundraising events; or hosting Celebration Saturday annually for the benefit of community partners, 蜜桃视频鈥檚 broader community 鈥 students, parents, Old Girls/Alums, employees 鈥 place great value on the role they play as champions in support of others.

Philanthropy is a key pillar of 蜜桃视频鈥檚 everyday life, which is evident through our culture and priorities. For decades, parents, Old Girls/Alums, employees, grandparents and other friends of 蜜桃视频 have made generous philanthropic contributions in support of enhancements and expansions in areas such as student financial support, athletics, the arts, facilities and academic program. While the tuition contributions that families make support the work needed to educate students, there are key enhancements necessary to both keep pace and stay ahead of learning and skill-building that will keep 蜜桃视频 students prepared and purposeful. These enhancements include recent renovations to the science facilities in the Upper School as well as program-enhancing contributions to the STEM Lab in the Junior School. It also includes support for the Wellbeing Program, which enables 蜜桃视频 to host world-renowned experts as guest speakers. Donations to student financial support have long been a priority to families, Old Girls/Alums and employees. Removing financial barriers to talented students is enabled by the belief that a 蜜桃视频 education is unique. Philanthropic contributions pave the current path and road ahead for girls in their education, leadership and empowerment.

We couldn鈥檛 do it without you.

In the coming weeks, enhancing athletics, outdoor education and play facilities will be a focus of 蜜桃视频鈥檚 philanthropic efforts. Financial support helps expand and enhance the learning opportunities in these areas, providing the space for students and the broader community to learn and grow. On the field, in the water, at the gym and on the playground, 蜜桃视频 students learn crucial lessons: courage, tenacity, goal-setting, teamwork and the pursuit of excellence. In addition to providing extensive health and wellness benefits, sport and outdoor play foster values that equip girls for long-term personal and professional success now and into the future. We look forward to sharing more about these opportunities for support in the coming months.

Applications for the 蜜桃视频 Board of Governors

Michael Copeland, Chair of the Governance Committee

I have the pleasure of writing to the 蜜桃视频 community on behalf of the Governance Committee of the Board of Governors as this is our formal call for applications to serve on the Board or on a Board Committee.

The primary responsibility of the Governance Committee is to ensure that the Board is well-equipped to carry out its oversight role with respect to the College. Part of that responsibility is to continually evaluate how well the Board and its committees carry out their mandates and advance the College鈥檚 educational mission.

One of the most important things the Governance Committee works on is identifying and nominating strong candidates for the Board and its committees. This is an ongoing effort as we try to maintain a roster of broadly qualified candidates. Using a competency-based model, the committee identifies skills and constituencies that need to be considered as we plan for the future.

In reviewing applications, the Governance Committee looks to constitute a Board that balances a mix of competencies and experience, established and newer Old Girls/Alums, current and past parents, and independent members. The Board is also committed to ensuring there is diverse representation on the Board of Governors whose skills and experience align with our competency framework.

In assessing applications, the Governance Committee favours no particular professional background over another, but we frequently seek specific areas of experience and expertise. This year the committee is especially interested in identifying potential candidates with one or more of the following: philanthropic board and/or charitable foundation board experience; capital infrastructure project oversight experience; and CPA/CFO/operational finance/public accountancy experience.

Governors are volunteers and must be willing to commit the substantial time, effort and energy necessary to fulfill the role and serve the school. It is also expected that a Board Governor will make 蜜桃视频 one of their top personal charitable priorities.

If you are interested in being considered for the Board or a committee, please let us know by completing the by Friday, February 2, 2024. Additional details on the role and responsibilities of Board and committee members .

Celebration Saturday

Christine Spence and Kate Crokam, Celebration Saturday Co-Chairs

At 蜜桃视频, our commitment to creating positive change was evident during this year’s Celebration Saturday. This special day brought together generations of HC community members and underscored our dedication to the school’s mission, vision and values. It was wonderful to gather together to support a common goal: supporting our Community Partners.

We are pleased to share that our collective efforts resulted in a significant achievement鈥攁 fundraising total of $55,000! This generous contribution will directly support our partners.

Through collaboration with organizations like Grenoble, Arts City and New Circles, we are able to provide both financial support and genuine co-learning experiences. Our approach centres on the four Ps鈥擯eople, Place, Perspective and Partnership. Connecting students with our Community Partners fosters authentic relationships and emphasizes the value of reciprocal learning.

Thank you to everyone who supported this important event at 蜜桃视频. We are already looking forward to Celebration Saturday 2024!

Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is a day to inspire generosity, with a common mission to create a world where giving back is part of everyday life. The movement started in 2013 and has been gaining momentum ever since. This year, Giving Tuesday was on Tuesday, November 28, which we promoted across 蜜桃视频’s social media channels.

We’d like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to our community for your support on Giving Tuesday! Through your generous contributions to our financial support program, we can continue to move forward with our 129 year old mission of preparing young women to make a difference and be leaders and good citizens. If you haven鈥檛 already participated, we hope that you will join us as we strive to make a 蜜桃视频 education inclusive and accessible for more students. Gifts of any amount are appreciated at:

This year鈥檚 Grads believe in providing support to those who might need additional assistance while making their way in the world. Some of the areas that could be supported by this fund include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Improved accessibility such as door operators and/or interior ramps, as well as wayfinding signage.

Do You Ever Wonder What Donor Stewardship Really Means?

Stewardship is about fostering relationships with the donor community following an initial donation. Not only does the stewardship process include gratitude and recognition of donors, it also involves demonstrating the impact of a donor鈥檚 philanthropic support. Stewardship activities鈥攕uch as developing annual reports and personalized stewardship reports鈥攅nsure donors are informed about how their contributions are managed and how their gifts positively elevate the organization鈥檚 mission. Through stewardship, donors receive regular communications and expressions of gratitude, all of which help to convey the importance of philanthropy and encourage future giving.

Here are some facts about giving in Canada1:

  • You can claim 15% of the first $200 you donate as a charitable tax credit and 29% on any amount over that limit.
  • You can transfer your charitable tax credit to your spouse.
  • There are federal and provincial charitable tax credits.
  • When you donate a gift of securities, the government will eliminate the taxable capital gain and you receive a tax receipt for the full market value of the security in the amount of the closing trading price on the day 蜜桃视频 receives the security.
  • Donating a gift of securities makes appreciated stock one of the most cost effective ways to donate to the 蜜桃视频 Foundation.

Students at the Ivy Market.

Thank you for Supporting Ivy Market!

蜜桃视频 Parents Association

On November 21, the HCPA kicked off the holiday season with our second annual Ivy Market. In addition to the bake sales and HCPA Marketplace, Ivy Market offered our HC community a chance to shop with local vendors, stock up on spiritwear and of course, socialize at the cocktail party.

Thank you to everyone who helped make Ivy Market a success. Whether you fired up your oven for the bake sale, volunteered your time to help out at the event, dropped by during the day to shop or came to the fabulous evening cocktail party, we couldn鈥檛 have done it without you!

Specifically, we would like to thank: Liz Phipps, Sherry Zhao, Arti Patel and Julia Skliarenko, who co-chaired the bake sales; Tim Costigan and Jaswinder Salh who oversaw the cocktail party; Martha Fell who organized an impressive selection of vendors; Lisa Windover and Mahnaz Hamidzadeh who co-chaired the HCPA Marketplace; and Cory Ellison who led event communications. An extra special thanks goes to Lisa Windover, Sarah D鈥橲ouza and Alex Hodgson for their hard work and creativity in spearheading the whole event. We also couldn鈥檛 have done this without the tireless support of HC鈥檚 Manager of Parent Relations Christine Spence and Admin Assistant Alex Hine

All funds raised by Ivy Market will be put toward the HCPA鈥檚 fundraising goals. Click to view photos from the event.

Staying Connected With Our Old Girls/Alums

Kate Crokam, Director, Alumni Engagement

Fall alumni engagement initiatives included the inaugural 蜜桃视频 Connections Presents: Joanna Griffiths ’01 and the Knix Entrepreneurial Journey event. With nearly 150 attendees, this gathering marked a significant milestone, kickstarting the 蜜桃视频 Connections Presents series. Joanna Griffiths’ insightful discussion not only captivated the audience, but also set the tone for future events, emphasizing our commitment to providing enriching experiences for Old Girls/Alums. Joanna also spoke to riveted students during Prayers earlier in the day.

Similarly, Reunion 2023 proved to be a success, enticing over 400 Old Girls/Alums to return to campus for an unforgettable homecoming celebration. This year, we introduced several new and engaging events as part of the reunion festivities, such as a Former Boarders Dinner, creating an even more vibrant and inclusive experience for the alum community.

Our commitment to fostering connections extends beyond flagship, GTA events. We are also excited to highlight the success of two young alum socials hosted in Kingston and London, specifically tailored for our most recent graduates studying at Queen’s and Western Universities. These events offered a chance for young alumni to engage in networking, exchange experiences and re-establish connections with the 蜜桃视频 community, highlighting our commitment to fostering a supportive network for Old Girls/Alums beyond their time at 蜜桃视频.

Reflecting on the achievements of Celebration Saturday and our fall alumni activities, we encourage you to explore the captivating stories featured in the digital magazine, . This publication captures the core of 蜜桃视频 Community’s accomplishments, offering a glimpse into the significant moments and connections that mold the shared journey. Read Chronicle magazine to stay connected and to delve into the evolving positive transformations at 蜜桃视频.

Amidst the continuation of these initiatives, we express our heartfelt thanks to the 蜜桃视频 community for your unwavering support, acknowledging that your dedication is crucial to the success of our endeavors.

Inside 蜜桃视频

Headshot of Krista Koekkoek

Message from the Vice Principal of Student Life and Wellbeing

Krista Koekkoek

It is hard to believe that I have only been at 蜜桃视频 since mid-August. During this time, I have been warmly welcomed by students, staff, parents and alumni alike; the community is alive with pride and keen to share its traditions and have me experience what it truly means to be a Gator. And so what have I noticed in the hallways, the classrooms, the gyms and the fields? What have I observed in Prayers, at Celebration Saturday and in the day-to-day interactions we benefit from in a small, tightly-knit community? It has been clear to me, from early on, that this place thrives on connections, prioritizes belonging and wants so deeply to find the best ways to both practise and instill the lifelong habits of wellbeing in its students and staff. It鈥檚 no surprise at all to me that this month鈥檚 Inside 蜜桃视频 has these very themes. In this month’s issue, you will find countless examples of the good work this community continues to do to support all who walk through these doors (and for those who have walked these halls before us).

I have spent the last decade of my career focusing on wellbeing in schools鈥攚hat it means, how it feels and how to live it fully鈥攁nd here is what I know to be true and primary: to be truly well, we must feel connected. We must feel like we belong. We need to know we matter to others and are seen for who we are authentically. And so, what a beautiful community for me to continue to build on this deeply ingrained capacity and strength for relational learning. At a time when the health and wellbeing of children and adolescents can feel threatened, we commit at 蜜桃视频 to bolstering the toolkit of our adults in their support of the growth of our students. Building self-awareness, flexibility and agency in them (all pillars of wellbeing) require intentionality and modelling from the adults who surround them. And we have the most capable group of staff to do this with.

In this issue, you鈥檒l hear from our Wellbeing Prefect, Emerson Southam, who, along with our Social Work team and the Wellbeing Council is in the throws of developing this year鈥檚 Upper School Thrive Week (our fabulous Junior School staff is busy supporting this same event with our younger students). A testament to our work in wellbeing is this student-driven initiative, aimed at a strength-based lens to taking care of ourselves and normalizing the human experience of feeling all emotions.

Please drop by, say hello, send me a note and share what wellbeing means to you in this community. I鈥檒l look forward to this journey with you.

Message from the Board of Governors

Jill Fraser, Chair of the Board

What a wonderful start to the new school year! The halls are once again filled with student laughter and chatter and there is so much excitement among students and faculty to be back on campus. So far this year we have had many exciting Upper and Junior School events such as Celebration Saturday, the Terry Fox Run, Awards Day and Gator Games, and we are looking forward to many more events to come!

I would like to extend a huge thank you to Debbie Simpson, our Past Chair, who introduced me as your incoming Board Chair in last month鈥檚 Inside 蜜桃视频. I took over the role of Board Chair on September 28 and I am ready and eager to continue the very important initiatives the Board has been working on under Debbie鈥檚 strong and dedicated leadership, including supporting the launch of the school鈥檚 new strategic plan. The Board at 蜜桃视频 is a governance body and our primary role is one of strategic oversight. We work in that capacity with the Principal and the Senior Leadership Team to set strategic goals and priorities, which guide the school鈥檚 growth and development. The Board oversees the financial health of the school and works to protect its long-term sustainability. As the new Chair, I am looking forward to working with the Board and the Senior Leadership Team as we continue to collaborate to ensure the continuing success of 蜜桃视频.

I wish everyone an enjoyable and healthy fall and encourage you all, new and old, to be active members of our vibrant community. There are many ways for you to participate in school life, including the , , the Foundation, the Board of Governors or its committees. We appreciate the time that you devote to our community.

Warm regards,

Jill

The Importance of Wellbeing

Emerson S., Wellbeing Prefect

My family has a long history of mental illness: we lost my uncle to his battle with depression and my grandmother has battled mental illness for the better part of her adult life. Open dialogue about mental health has been a staple at our dinner table for as long as I can remember, which is why wellbeing is so important to me.

But a healthy mind is only one component of the wellbeing equation. My approach, which is entirely consistent with the approach at HC, is to touch upon the wellbeing of the whole person. A 蜜桃视频 education is about the growth of mind, body and spirit. There are so many negative influences in the world today on young women, such as social media, telling us who and what we are supposed to be and, equally, who and what we cannot be. My goal this year is to create events and an atmosphere where we are comfortable with who we are and who we want to be, an environment where we can speak openly about issues that matter to us. I truly believe that the ivy walls provide a safe, loving space in which we can do that.

As a way to raise awareness about mental health and wellbeing, 蜜桃视频 is hosting Thrive Week from November 20 to 24. During Thrive Week, we will hear from students and guest speakers who will walk us through their journeys with mental wellbeing. We will also have some special therapy dog visitors! But Thrive Week is only one week of the academic year. On World Mental Health Day on October 10, the Grade 12 Prefects handed out a list of the multiple resources available to students who may need someone to talk to (coupled with candy, of course) on behalf of the Wellbeing Council. We are excited about the affirmation exercises in each Upper School TA during the year, which started at the beginning of October. I am also teaming with other Prefects and Grade 12 leaders to organize events for the Junior School, Middle School and Upper School that touch on the wellbeing of the whole person.

Most importantly, as Wellbeing Prefect, I want to help create an atmosphere where the halls are filled with joy, laughter and smiles.

Emerson

Supporting Emotional Wellbeing and Growth at the Junior School

Kate White, Head of Junior School

In the ever-evolving landscape of education, the focus has progressively shifted from solely academic achievements to nurturing the holistic development of our students. Recognizing the crucial role of social-emotional skills in shaping future success, the 蜜桃视频 Junior School has recently begun implementing two research-based programs, RULER and Second Step, to support the emotional wellbeing and growth of both our teachers and students.

Research has underscored the significant impact of social-emotional skill development on academic performance and long-term success. By fostering self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making, these programs equip students with the tools necessary to navigate complex social interactions, manage stress and exhibit resilience in the face of challenges.

The Junior School faculty and staff are embarking on a learning journey this year with RULER. This is a systemic approach to social and emotional learning developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, which aims to infuse the principles of emotional intelligence into JK to Grade 12 schools, informing how leaders lead, teachers teach, students learn and families support students.

Part of what differentiates RULER from other school-based initiatives is that it focuses first on developing adults in the school, both personally and professionally, so they can be role models and knowledgeable implementers of the skill-based instruction for students. After the teachers have been trained, the goal is to start infusing the approach in classes next year, as well as providing education for families.

In addition, this year Junior School faculty will continue to implement the Second Step program to support the wellbeing of our students. Second Step is a research-based program that provides explicit instruction and practice of key social-emotional skills considered necessary for students to effectively navigate social situations and build positive relationships with their peers. Lessons will support our students to develop skills in the following areas:

  • Empathy
  • Impulse Control
  • Problem Solving
  • Emotional Regulation
  • Social Awareness
  • Relationship Skills
  • Responsible Decision Making
  • Positive Self-Talk

The Second Step program will be taught by Child and Youth Worker, Holly Fournier, in collaboration with classroom teachers.

Supporting our younger students through their social-emotional development is an important part of the 蜜桃视频 experience. Our goal is to develop the self-care skills within our students so they can continue to support their wellbeing needs into the Upper School and beyond.

Rethinking What It Means to Study

Jennifer Goldberg, Director of Academic Operations

Many students believe the key to stronger academic performance is investing more time in their school work. Certainly, time is important. However, overemphasizing 鈥渢ime spent鈥 obscures the reality that the quality of the time is at least as important as the quantity. In his latest book, Outsmart Your Brain: Why Learning Is Hard and How You Can Make It Easy, esteemed cognitive psychologist Dr. Daniel Willingham makes a powerful analogy between learning and physical exercise. He notes the exercise that challenges our body is the one most likely to strengthen it; so, even though exercising this way is likely to feel very difficult, it is the most effective choice. By contrast, Willingham explains, when it comes to learning, our brains are wired to trick us, telling us that what feels easy鈥攚hat we can do without much effort鈥攊s the most effective way to engage.

Here鈥檚 a specific school example: one of the most popular student study techniques is rereading (and perhaps highlighting) one’s notes and course texts. However, experiments have repeatedly shown that this approach achieves very little in terms of memory and learning. In other words, rereading is popular not because it yields results but because it feels easy. Many hours spent studying for a test in this way are, often, many hours wasted.

Far more effective, Willingham explains, is retrieval practice: processes that require us to pull something out of our memory. Students can engage with retrieval practice by, for example, putting their course materials away and using a blank page to create their own study guide. In contrast to rereading, this technique pushes the brain to engage actively with the content, making meaning and building connections. What we must remember is that retrieval practice will feel much harder than rereading; as Willingham says, 鈥淛udge the effectiveness of a method by the results, not by how it feels to do it.鈥

For students who鈥檝e concluded that the only road to academic achievement is paved with sleepless nights, focusing on 鈥渢ime spent鈥 may not be very helpful. Instead, ask: 鈥淗ow did you use the time you spent on this?鈥 This shift helps us resist the fallacy that academic success can come only at the cost of wellbeing, and emphasizes instead the concrete habits and behaviours that we know support students in growing into empowered and independent learners.

For further exploration, I recommend these books:

  • Outsmart Your Brain by Daniel Willingham
  • Under Pressure and The Emotional Lives of Teenagers by Lisa Damour

Note that 蜜桃视频 is thrilled to welcome Lisa Damour to campus on November 28. During her time here, Dr. Damour will be presenting learning sessions for students, faculty and parents.

Inside Focus

Why Belonging Matters

Nicole Cozier, Executive Director of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging

Belonging is a fundamental need we all share, and it plays a vital role in shaping our identities, relationships and our overall wellbeing.

Belonging, at its essence, is the feeling of being accepted, valued and connected to a particular group or community. It’s that warm and comforting sensation that arises when we find ourselves in a place where people just GET US!

But it can go wrong.

It goes wrong when we get caught up in belonging鈥檚 evil twin: fitting in. Fitting in is actually the opposite of belonging. To paraphrase researcher and author Bren茅 Brown: 鈥淔itting in requires us to change who we are to be accepted, while belonging requires us to BE who we are.鈥 True belonging is not a conditional tie to acceptance, but an authentic embrace of our true identities.

At 蜜桃视频, we are committed to fostering a sense of belonging and connection for each and every student that is part of our community. We know there is no one-size-fits-all approach. That鈥檚 why there are so many different options for our students to choose from to find themselves and a trusted community of friends and adults who will support them in who they are.

Our nine Affinity Group and Alliance spaces are just one example of how students can find community and space for their own voices to shine. Affinity Groups are spaces that allow community members who share a common identity or an aspect of their identity鈥攗sually one that is marginalized or non-dominant鈥攖o gather and talk in a safe space about issues and experiences related to that identity. Alliances are spaces where people who share a common commitment to those who hold marginalized identities and the issues that impact them can gather to learn, engage in dialogue and mobilize action toward addressing these issues in their school communities.

Finding a community where we find connection in our similarities is only one aspect of belonging though. Belonging is also about recognizing the strength in our differences. So ensuring that students have the support to step outside of their comfort zones to connect with peers and other people with different identities, interests and perspectives is critical. Whether this is in Prayers through featured dates of significance celebrated by diverse communities, EDIB-focused sessions in Advisory and Form groups, or just through the many clubs and activities that 蜜桃视频 has to offer, there are numerous opportunities for our students to find peers to connect with and learn about experiences different than their own. It is in embracing and exploring our differences that we foster the deepest sense of connection that transcends superficial boundaries and allows us to continue to grow into our best selves, on our own path. This is the beauty of belonging, connection and community-building.

All of us want to feel like we belong in the places and spaces that are important to us. And, it is important we remember that our level of belonging will never be greater than our level of self-acceptance. Believing that we are enough is what gives us the courage to be authentic. While there is no question that this is a lifelong pursuit, our goal is to ensure that our 蜜桃视频 students have the foundation and develop the tools that they can carry with them wherever their journeys take them.

Meet Our Faculty & Staff

The Reverend Jillian Ruch

School Chaplain

The Reverend Jillian Ruch joins 蜜桃视频 this year as our School Chaplain. With more than 20 years of experience in the area of youth ministry and social work, Rev. Ruch supports student wellbeing at the school in many ways.

Prior to being ordained in 2022, Rev. Ruch was a front line social worker and supervisor for the Children鈥檚 Aid Society of Toronto, mainly in the Scarborough area. With this background in social work, she has excellent listening skills and the ability to connect with others in meaningful ways. One of her goals at 蜜桃视频 is to learn from students, staff, faculty and families about their perspectives as a community, while providing comfort and a steady presence for those in need of pastoral care.

Rev. Ruch brings a sense of curiosity with her about where people are in their spiritual journeys and uses inquiry and compassion to hold space for discussions in and outside of the Prayers space. This includes most recently meeting with groups, such as the Truth and Reconciliation Committee and the Prayers Council, to explore the tensions that exist between the Indigenous Peoples and the wider church and how that intersects with the reconciliation work that they are leading in our community. She is committed to working with and through this tension, knowing that through these difficult conversations our community learns, grows and leans into the Calls to Action wherever possible.

With a growth mindset that鈥檚 grounded in experience from years of working with youth from various cultures and backgrounds, Rev. Ruch embodies 蜜桃视频鈥檚 Anglican values through her Christian identity, prayers and blessings as she hopes to learn more about and elevate the voices and cultures of others at 蜜桃视频. Her goal is to support 蜜桃视频鈥檚 community by modelling what it means to be inclusive, open-minded and inquisitive. Inside 蜜桃视频

Katrina Samson

Principal’s Message

Dr. Katrina Samson

Happy September! We have been blessed here at 蜜桃视频 with so many opportunities to connect with our community this fall. Our Grade 7, 8, 9 and 12 students were away at camps where they bonded as a class, developed teamwork skills and prepared for the year ahead. This past week, we welcomed back hundreds of Old Girls/Alums to campus for Reunion Week. We celebrated those Old Girls who reached their 50+ year reunion milestones at the Golden Reflections Luncheon. We welcomed back former Boarders to connect with our current Boarding students and staff at the Former Boarder Dinner. We capped the week off with the Reunion Cocktail Reception, where classes ending in 鈥3 and 鈥8 came together to reconnect with one another and their beloved school.

On Saturday, our whole school community came together for Celebration Saturday 2023. This is an annual event where we gather to raise funds and awareness for the important work done via our Community Partnerships. It was another beautiful day at 蜜桃视频, but even more impactful was seeing our community come together in support of local organizations that are making a difference. In short, it was a day designed to build community and to put our mission鈥to make a difference鈥攊nto action.

I’m energized when I contemplate the future we’re building together at 蜜桃视频. We are coming off of a year of intensive planning as we worked to collect insight and feedback to shape 蜜桃视频鈥檚 next strategic direction. In the coming weeks and months, you鈥檒l hear more about the bold plans we have to ensure that our girls are receiving the very best preparation to head out into the world and be positive change-makers. You鈥檒l also hear about the near-term and future-term initiatives we are undertaking to continue in our pursuit of excellence as a school. I again want to thank the students, employees, parents and Old Girls/Alums who shared their ideas and hopes for 蜜桃视频, building on our rich history and investing in future opportunities for our girls.

As we welcome this new school year, I encourage you to join us in exploring the experiences, opportunities and learning that will allow our girls to graduate as young women who will lead progress and innovation into future generations. I am filled with optimism and hope for 蜜桃视频鈥檚 future as we embark on this new school year together.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our 蜜桃视频 community鈥攁ll of the students, staff, faculty, parents, families, extended families and friends鈥攚ho have made my past three years as Board Chair, and previous six years as a Governor of the 蜜桃视频 Board, so incredibly rewarding and enjoyable.听The Board and I feel blessed to be a part of this beautiful community filled with wonderful people who hold 蜜桃视频 very dear to their hearts.

Deputy Principal’s Message

Lindsay Norberg

Dear 蜜桃视频 Community,

It has been an absolute joy to welcome faculty, students and families back to campus in these past few weeks, marking the beginning of the 2023-24 school year. In the spirit of Maria from The Sound of Music, we can truly say that “The halls are alive with the sound of music.”

Each member of our community holds their unique back-to-school rituals. For some, it signifies the promise of new possibilities that await in a fresh school year. For others, it involves a trip to a school supply store, envisioning crisp notebooks and new pens. Personally, the excitement of a new school year stems from welcoming new members into our school community and contemplating how they will contribute to and shape 蜜桃视频. Every year, meeting new faculty and staff in August and witnessing their enthusiasm for the potential that lies ahead, followed by greeting new students and families and learning about their aspirations, fills me with a renewed appreciation for the 蜜桃视频 community.

The summer months offer different experiences for everyone; a time of quiet reflection and rejuvenation for some, or a change of scenery for others. However, for many teams at 蜜桃视频, summer is a bustling season as we diligently work to enhance school facilities and implement planned improvements. Notably, Upper School students will observe the construction of a brand new Middle School Science Lab, the establishment of a new Grade 7 to 9 Guidance Office, restoration of the front entrance, updates to the Security desk, and the introduction of new furniture in the Rotunda, Temerty and BioWall.

One of the most cherished aspects of this period is welcoming our students and families back to campus. The Boarding Staff took great delight in warmly receiving all the Boarding students and spending time with new families, aiding them in acquainting themselves with the campus and the diverse array of programs 蜜桃视频 offers. On Orientation Day, we enthusiastically greeted all new students and the Grade 7s who have crossed the bridge to the Upper School. These first few weeks are about building relationships, trying new things and establishing routines. It is wonderful to see our youngest learners become more comfortable with their school routines and build connections within their classrooms.

With the excitement of a new school year also comes new challenges. It is through these challenges that we learn and grow, but it is important to remember that we are here to support all members of the school community as they explore 2023-24. When these situations come up, we鈥檒l address them together using our school values of integrity, inquiry, compassion and courage as our guide.

Cheers to a new year,

Lindsay

Thank You for Supporting Celebration Saturday!

The excitement of the new school year quickly turned to excitement for Celebration Saturday as students, faculty, staff and parents worked together to bring this time-honoured tradition of putting our mission鈥攑reparing young women to make a difference鈥攊nto action. It was a day that celebrated 蜜桃视频鈥檚 community, the House system and (of course) our community partners, who are the recipients of all funds raised at this event.

We are so grateful to everyone who participated, whether it was donating a silent auction item, helping out as a student or parent volunteer, being part of the Bazaar or just coming out to connect and enjoy our campus. We had another great year of fun and fundraising! Together we answered the call our founding Principal, Ms. Ellen Knox, put to all of her students鈥斺淲hat will you do?鈥濃攂y working together to make a difference for our Community Partnerships. A sincere thank you to you all from our HCPA and our Co-Chairs Christine Spence and Kate Crokam.

Working Together with Our Community Partnerships

Fatima Kaba, Manager of Learning Experiences

Over the years, 蜜桃视频 has created relationships with community partners that not only benefit our school, but also have profound impacts on the broader community. These collaborations are essential for cultivating a sense of social responsibility, empathy and civic engagement among students, while providing 蜜桃视频 students opportunities to make a difference.

Each Community Partnership is founded on our “4 P” approach. We partner with people first, not necessarily organizations; we honour the place of the people and that informs our work; we seek out different perspectives; and once we have done this, can we enter into a true reciprocal partnership. One of the primary advantages of engaging in Community Partnerships is the development of empathy and social responsibility in students. Through interactions with community members and organizations, students gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and needs within their local area. This first-hand exposure to real-world issues helps students develop empathy and a desire to make positive impacts. They learn to appreciate the value of helping others and develop a sense of responsibility toward their community. Students who participate in our long-standing weekly partnerships at Grenoble Public School and Art City are immersed in a new community by sharing ideas, gaining new perspectives and developing their commitment to others.

While the communities served in these partnerships benefit from 蜜桃视频鈥檚 ongoing efforts, the students and school as a whole also benefit from the reciprocal relationship. They gain access to valuable information, expertise and experiences that enhance the educational opportunities they offer. These partnerships enrich the curriculum and provide students with diverse learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom.

At our Community Partnership Fest on Wednesday, September 27, Upper School students will have the opportunity to learn more about our weekly and bi-weekly partnerships and sign up to be part of this incredible learning experience in collaboration with our community partners.

The Forum for Change strives to develop and continue to grow our relationships with our community partners as they foster a sense of interconnectedness and social responsibility that can last a lifetime.

Student Opportunities Through the Forum for Change

Jessica Randall, Manager of Global Learning Experiences

The Forum for Change (F4C) is the global heartbeat of 蜜桃视频, providing students with experiential learning opportunities outside of the classroom and with the world around them. Bringing 蜜桃视频鈥檚 mission to life, the F4C鈥檚 role is to support students in finding their passions and interests to make a difference in the world, locally and globally.

Recognizing our vision for 蜜桃视频 graduates, we want them to be globally-minded, confident and resilient decision-makers. We help build bridges and networks to support these opportunities so our students can learn from new perspectives, be self-directed, meet people and discover more about their cultures.

The F4C stretches and challenges our students in ways that support our Portrait of a Grad: in particular, Globally-Minded, Being Flexible and Adaptable Thinkers, and Leaning into Action. We support, through our learning experiences, their development of identity and sense of self with a disposition to action. Through their participation in these opportunities, students learn to adapt and thrive in complex and changing environments so, when they graduate, they can navigate a dynamic and uncertain world.

Opportunities include participating in the Global Learning & Leading Diploma (GLLD), travelling with our Global Exchanges and Excursions, and working with our partner . Each of these programs is designed to equip students to make a positive difference in the world with a focus on knowing, understanding and developing a practice of global competencies. These programs encourage students to broaden their cultural fluency and make an impact through deep and meaningful learning experiences. Our memberships in global organizations, such as UNESCO Associated Schools Network and Round Square, means more opportunities for our students to engage in global projects, conferences and connections beyond our ivy walls.

The F4C is the place to go for students who have big ideas, want to help those around them and learn more about the world outside of 蜜桃视频 through our various opportunities and partnerships.

A New Year of Athletic Opportunities

Anna Bartlett, JS Athletic Director, and Carla Di Filippo, US Athletic Director

The start of the fall season will always be full of excitement because it means sports are back at HC! For us, the Athletic Directors at the Junior and Upper Schools, there is almost no better feeling than the joy of watching our students playing sports on our beautiful 22-acre campus. Typical after school activities for our athletes include swimming in the pool; playing basketball in the gym; competing in field hockey, flag football or soccer on the fields; enjoying the on-campus disc golf course; learning tennis or pickleball on our tennis courts; or running in the Lisa Hardie Woodland Trail. We are truly blessed to be on this campus and in this space.

This fall, the Upper School boasts 27 sports teams while the Junior School is offering 13 teams. At 蜜桃视频, school spirit runs high and we hope each student has the chance to play one sport at some point this school year. There is no better way to meet new people, learn something new and be active all while having fun.

If you want to view some great photos and updates about athletics, please follow our Instagram page: We also publish Gator Zone, a student-led newsletter, three times a year. Gator Zone has student-written articles about various 蜜桃视频 athletic topics. We are very excited for the school year and sports! As the students say: 鈥淩OLL GATORS!鈥

Can You Hear the Buzz?

Garth Nichols, Vice Principal, Experiential Learning and Innovation

Nestled in a fenced-off area with ample sunlight and shade is home to 蜜桃视频’s newest members of the community: honeybees. If you read the summer mailing from August, you’ll know that we have partnered with Alveole, a beekeeping company that has excellent experience in schools and organizations in supporting honeybee hives. We have our own designated Beekeeper, and hosted two “Hive to HoneyJar鈥 workshops this month, where our students, faculty and staff had the opportunity to harvest some honey from our hive. Alveole looks after the hive and the bees, ensuring they are well taken care of; moreover, Alveole will be working with the Forum for Change and our interested students to use the data from the bees (their numbers, behaviours, as well as the ingredients in their honey) to learn about the health of our campus ecosystem and the surrounding community. We will be using our honeybees for land-based learning experiences and sustainability practices: understanding pollinator competition in the city of Toronto, and what we can do to support our pollinators and our ecosystem. Admissions Season at 蜜桃视频

Each September when students arrive back on campus, 蜜桃视频 comes alive again. Throughout the summer we plan for their arrival and then, just as quickly as they arrive, the Admissions Team is already focused on the enrolment process for next year鈥檚 new students.

Prospective families considering 蜜桃视频 for their child across all grade levels have multiple opportunities to get to know the school in the fall and early winter months. As part of our Admissions process, all applicants to entry years meet with a member of our Admissions Team for their interview, which is a chance for both the applicant and the school to get to know more about each other. In addition to the interview, attending one of our on-campus events is an excellent way to get to know more about 蜜桃视频 and its people, program and campus.

Group tours are a great way to learn more about 蜜桃视频. Beginning in early October, we offer student-led tours of the Upper School (Grades 7 to 12) and parent-led tours of the Junior School (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6). Tours are a chance to connect with current students and parents about their experiences as members of the HC community, see our facilities and get a feeling for school life. Tours can be booked online according to your schedule and run throughout the application process.

In October, we will open our doors to prospective families who are keen to see what 蜜桃视频 is all about at our annual Open House. As a community, we work to get our school ready for the volume of visitors who come to see our programs in action. Prospective families can expect a personalized tour from one of our student Ambassadors, a chance to see our facilities and the opportunity to connect and learn first-hand from faculty, administrators, staff and parents about the 蜜桃视频 experience.

If you know any families who are interested in learning more about 蜜桃视频, please encourage them to register for one of our two Open Houses:

  • Junior School: Tuesday, October 17
  • Grades 7 and 9: Wednesday, October 18

Our team looks forward to connecting with interested students and their parents/guardians throughout the Admission season. Learn more at our Virtual Admission Centre.

Unveiling Grenoble: A Journey of Service, Friendship and Impact

Eve U., Head of Grenoble Community Partnership

When people ask me about Grenoble, four things immediately come to mind: carrot muffins, uncontrollable laughter, birthday cake bear paws and endless amounts of grade 5 math homework. My decision to join Grenoble was one of the best ones I鈥檝e made so far during high school, and being the Head of the partnership is an opportunity I鈥檓 extremely grateful to have.

Grenoble is one of the longest-standing community partnerships at 蜜桃视频 with its mission being to focus on teaching and learning together while creating connections through the understanding of lived experiences and needs. In the program, students get partnered with kids from Grenoble Public School and work with them over the course of 16 weeks. The length of the program really allows partners to bond and to get to know each other on a deeper level, which is a unique characteristic that I love. Whether it鈥檚 bonding over the combined misunderstanding of homework instructions or over silly games after we finish work, Grenoble provides endless opportunities to form connections.听

My very first day of the program was filled with nerves, excitement and a little bit of fear. The plan was to play games, get to know the kids and just generally give time for everyone to get to know each other. Surprisingly, there was someone there who seemed to be even more nervous than I was and, funny enough, this someone ended up being my partner for the rest of the year. We sat at the same table, I introduced myself to her and the rest was history. Suddenly, shy smiles turned into big grins, which then turned into endless, uncontrollable giggles. She and I got up to all sorts of things. From trying to sneak extra snacks, to her attempting to teach me cool dance moves, to struggling over math puzzles, we formed a friendship like no other. I went in expecting to be a tutor and I left with a best friend. My experience is the reason I’m excited to be the Head of Grenoble this year. I want to help create a space where partners can hopefully foster friendships like mine and have the opportunity to enjoy and learn from each other.听

Grenoble is more than just a community partnership; it’s an opportunity to make a difference, form lasting bonds and experience the joys of helping others. As I reflect on my time with Grenoble, I can confidently say it has enriched my high school journey in ways I never anticipated. So, whether it’s the aroma of carrot muffins, the echoes of laughter, the fun games after work or the challenge of grade 5 math homework, Grenoble offers a world of experiences waiting to be explored.

Jessica Randall

Manager of Global Learning Experiences

Our newest member of the Forum for Change is Jessica Randall, who is the Manager of Global Learning Experiences. In this role, she oversees 蜜桃视频鈥檚 Exchange program and supports our Community Partnerships. This includes working with a variety of organizations in facilitating art programming, tutoring sessions and mentoring opportunities, as well as hosting food and clothing drives. 鈥淕iving back to the community is something I am really passionate about, and being able to do that while helping students find outreach activities they are passionate about is very fulfilling,鈥 says Ms. Randall. 鈥淚 am so excited to have joined such a welcoming, friendly and spirited community.鈥

You can find Ms. Randall in the Forum for Change office, located in the Resource Centre (the library). Students are invited to go to the Forum for Change for advice, support and guidance on a variety of things, including finding the right opportunity for them to earn their mandatory 40 hours of community service required to graduate. She also mentors students so they are prepared for what to expect while on Exchange, whether locally or abroad, and acts as a liaison with our Exchange student guests, ensuring they feel safe and comfortable while away from home.

Whether going on a global excursion through our partnership with Round Square, participating in our Exchange program or working with different communities through our local and international partnerships, Ms. Randall is available to provide guidance to our students on their journeys. These experiential learning opportunities are excellent ways for teenagers to gain self-confidence and independence as they discover Canada and the world, meet different people, make new friends and learn about other cultures as they prepare for the future beyond 蜜桃视频.
